Why does mold occur on mulch?

The sudden appearance of molds on the lawn or on your wood mulch is a common thing during cool, wet periods.  The most common mold appears as "foamy" patches on wood mulch; this is slime mold . Slime molds can be white, gray, yellow, purple, orange or brown in color. Some people say the patches look like vomit from a dog or other animal.  These primitive fungi are not destructive organisms and can simply be hosed away with a high powered stream of water or shoveled up and put in the trash.  For more information refer to: PlantTalk script "Slime mold."
