What are some suggestions for controlling deerflies around a pond?

There are no chemical controls for deer fly (Chrysops spp., Silvius spp.)  larvae, which develop in mud around edges of ponds and small streams. However, breeding can be suppressed by removing vegetation around pond edges to inhibit egg-laying. To control adults, insecticides should be directed at shrubbery and other resting sites. For more information on control of deerflies see the fact sheet Biting Flies.
