Master Gardeners are trained Extension volunteers across the country who have an active interest in home gardening and a strong desire to help other members of their community with horticulture questions. The primary duty of a Master Gardener volunteer is to pass on the education they receive to others interested in gardening. At Colorado State University, 50 hours of training is provided by horticulture specialists and Extension agents through classes that include basic botany, plant physiology, identification and control of insects, plant diseases, soils and nutrition, care of trees and ornamentals, lawn maintenance and basics of xeriscaping. Master Gardeners then assist people who call or come into Extension offices with questions, and they also take on tasks such as writing newspaper articles, speaking to garden clubs, assisting with horticultural therapy, or working booths at garden centers, garden shows and farmers' markets.
