If West Nile virus or other mosquito-borne illnesses are known to be active in the area, then precautions against mosquito bites should be taken. Protection against mosquitoes includes wearing shoes, socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt when a person will be outdoors for long periods of time--especially during the evenings, and use of an effective mosquito repellent according to label directions. Also taking steps to reduce mosquito activity around the home should include reducing or eliminating all standing water--or if the standing water is permanent, such as a fishpond or stock tank, then it can be treated with floating Bti briquets or similar larvicides.
