June is the time to fertilize warm season turf in Colorado, such as buffalo grass or blue grama; apply ½ to 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. Fertilizer applications are appropriate for these grasses only at this time and the fertilizer needs to be watered in appropriately. Cool season grasses, such as Kentucky bluegrass, become dormant (brown) during the hot weather. These cool season grasses will green up again in the fall. Continue to water early in the day to reduce the incidence of disease and evaporation loss.
