July and early August are excellent times to dig and divide the iris rhizomes. Carefully lift the plants out of the ground with a pitchfork. Discard any diseased, woody or insect-infested sections. Cut the sections and expose these to the air for several hours before planting. Plant the new plants shallowly, just exposing the "heel" of the iris root. The foliage is typically cut back into a short fan to allow the plant energy to go to new rooting.
