I live in Colorado and my large cottonwood trees have brown spots on the trunks that ooze dark brown sap-like stuff. What is it and what can I treat this with?

This is most likely slime flux, also known as Bacterial wet wood. There is no effective means of control. Keep the tree healthy with proper watering and fertility and the tree should be able to live with this infection. Check out the web site at Wetwood for further information on this disease.
