Varieties of cactus that will thrive in Colorado include brittle prickly pear cactus, plains prickly pear cactus, ball cactus, and hedgehog cactus (also called pincushion cactus), as well as some other types. See  1028 Winter-hardy Cacti for details.  When purchasing cactus, check the U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardniness Zone Map and the recommended growing conditions to determine if certain varieties are suited for the planting area. Colorado's growing zones vary from 3 in the foothills and mountains, to 5 in some protected metro areas.
