Norway maples are very prone to develop large maple aphid infestations. In fall, aphid populations may increase as ladybird beetle (ladybug) predators migrate. Aphids do not completely metabolize sap/fluids sucked from leaves, and they excrete a sticky sugary material called honeydew. Yellow jackets (wasps) are attracted to the sugary honeydew. To reduce the number of yellow jackets, use a trap and spray an insecticide to control aphids on the maple. For more information, go to: http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/insect/05511.html.
