Norfolk Island pine (Araucaria heterophylla) is not a pine at all, but a member of a small separate plant family, the Araucariaceae. It is hardy in Zones 9b through 11 and above. The Norfolk Island pine does, however, produce both male and female cones, usually on separate trees. The female cones (strobili) resemble large green pine cones, maturing to brown. Seeds are flat, light brown, and about 1.5 inches long. In its natural setting, Norfolk Island pine self-seeds. Most commercial propagation is from collected seed.
