We planted a small bed of strawberries last year, and the plants look very healthy and have many runners. But the fruit is small and deformed. What's wrong?

What you have described is the matted-row system of strawberry production. To produce large strawberries, thin the plants such that the remaining plants receive adequate moisture and nutrients. The deformed fruit could be due to a lack of pollination or frost damage. Thinning the plants will increase the pollination and should result in larger, well-formed fruit.
