Is it necessary to use fluorescent grow lights to start seeds indoors, or will ordinary fluorescent light supplemented by window light do?

A fixture with two regular 40-watt, cool-white fluorescent lights, supplemented with some filtered sunlight, will be sufficient to start your seeds indoors. Grow lights can be very expensive and are not always necessary. If you have some filtered sunlight or a low-wattage incandescent light to provide the red and infrared radiation plants require to achieve successful growth, then there is no need to go the extra expense.
