Heliotrope (Heliotropium arborescens) is grown as an annual in Front Range Colorado containers or gardens. It will not self-seed. There are many named cultivars and selections with flowers from white to pink to deep violet-blue. In fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun, most varieties will form a 12- to 18-inch bushy shrub. There are also dwarf varieties. Seed is sown in spring at 61 to 64 degrees F. Stem tip cuttings or semi-ripe cuttings of named cultivars can sometimes be rooted.
