Our boxelder tree has some dead branches and it looks like the tree bark is growing over the base of them. Is this normal?

Trees respond to injury by compartmentalizing damaged or dying tissue. Depending upon the nature and location of the injury, protective callus growth may eventually cover the affected area. Proper pruning can facilitate the process. Dead branches should be removed.
