Information about various types of innovative manure treatment technologies can be found in a number of places. Even though there are many types of manure treatment technologies, most are still in the research stage. Many universities and research groups have evaluated technologies such as solid-liquid separation, nitrification, denitrification, struvite extraction, and composting. Land-grant universities should be able to provide information on where research results can be obtained for the desired manure treatment technology. Much of this work has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Transactions of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) and Journal of Soil and Water Conservation (published by the Soil and Water Conservation Society). Another group that has been evaluating farm-scale manure treatment technologies is Farm Pilot Project Coordination Inc. (FPPC). Final project and quarterly update reports can be found at www.fppcinc.org.
There are a number of other countries (in particular, Canada and much of Europe) that have done considerable amounts of testing, evaluating, and installing innovative manure treatment technologies. Using the various Web search engines with the desired technology parameters should yield enough material to get one started in evaluating the various systems available.
Another potential source of information for manure treatment would be from the manufacturers of these products. Check a particular manufacturer’s Web site or request information from the company to help in evaluating available options.
