"Rose Growers Disease" is also known as Sporothrichosis and is caused by an organism called Sporothrix schenckii. It is a thermally-dimorphic fungus that has world-wide distibution and is associated with soil and plants. The organism enters the body through a small skin injury and then can spread along the lymphatic system. Treatment is organic iodine orally or some of the newer anti-fungal drugs. Response to treatment is often quarded and requires long-term treatment (months). Since the drugs used for treatment can have significant side effects, it is important that you work closely with your veterinarian while your mare is receiving treatment.
