Do mares go through menopause similar to women?

Yes. Aged mares undergo a similar decline in the number of tertiary follicles observed by ultrasound as is seen in women. Reproductive senescence appears to occur in mares around 20 years of age. In one research study, approximately 37% of mares over 24 years of age failed to show any ovarian activity.
