During your mare's pregnancy, you should keep the following records:
* The date bred, the date ovulated, and if ovulated more than one follicle.
* Pregnancy check at 45 days, 120 days, and in the fall. Also helpful to include is the veterinarian's printout of the ultrasound scans of follicles and embryo.
* Vaccinations schedule. See the American Association for Equine Practitioners for a complete vaccination schedule.
* Deworming schedule. Deworm your mare every 2 months throughout pregnancy and then at 30 days prior to expected foaling.
* Amount of feed fed each day, including hay and grain.
* Any behavioral changes as the mare approaches foaling.
* The date when the mare starts to show signs of mammary gland development.
* Notes on the daily observation of the mare so that you can pick up early signs of any issues.
* Pregnancy length so if you breed again you will have more information to get through the next pregnancy. Also, it is important to record any problems associated with foaling, time of foaling, and passage of afterbirth.
Additional Management Tips:
* Do not give your mare unnecessary drugs during the first 60 days or during the last 30 days of pregnancy.
* Hoof care schedule. The mare should be shod or trimmed every 6-8 weeks. It is a good idea to wait until after foaling to trim because some mares will become foot sore if trimmed too close to foaling.
