A bowlegged horse has a flexural deformity originating at the knee or carpus joint. Typically the knee is to the outside of the imaginary perpendicular line drawn down from the point of the shoulder to the ground. A straight leg should be divided in half by this line. A bowlegged horse is not able to be corrected once the horse is of a mature age and the bones have stopped growing. If, however, the horse is less than two years of age, there are a few possibilities: 1) many young horses grow out of this flexural deformity with little to no intervention; 2) surgical intervention is an option (a veterinary consult is recommended); or 3) other veterinary therapies may be a possibility. However, consulting with your local equine veterinarian is always a good idea.
