Could anteaters or armadillos control fire ants?

Last Updated: April 03, 2012

Armadillos may burrow into fire ant colonies searching for food such as the brood or worker ants. However, they will not eliminate a colony because they would probably not eat the queen(s). Armadillos also make unsightly holes in lawns and are considered pests themselves.

Anteaters, which are not native to the United States, could eat fire ants in areas where both species occur. However, like armadillos, they would be of little use in controlling fire ants.
