The goal in pest management is to protect the home and the home’s occupants from the risks associated from pests and pesticides. Insects have a part in the ecosystem, so measures should be taken to exclude the pests from the home, not kill all insects, as some can be beneficial, that may be in the yard around the home. Barrier spraying is not the most effective method of preventing pests from entering a home, having a home that is sealed from the outside and checking packages entering the home is more effective and is better for the environment. To tighten the building, keep window screens in good repair, keeps doors and windows shut, caulk cracks and gaps around doors and windows, and make sure that large openings around outside drainage lines and sewer vents are screened or sealed. Sanitation involves the elimination of shelter, food, and water. This goes a long way in improving the chances of maximum effectiveness in your pest management program. Keep areas dry and free of exposed foods. Keep stored food, even pet food, in sealed containers. Reduce clutter, especially cardboard boxes, rolled carpeting, stored paper, etc. Take out the trash on a regular basis and keep the garbage can covered. Also, trim any vegetation that touches a building's exterior so that there is a gap between the plant and building.
