My horse's frog is soft, and part of the frog is missing. What could be the problem? Could it cause the horse to limp?

A frog which is untrimmed will usually shed at least twice a year and sometimes several times a year. So it could be that the frog is shedding. A normally healthy frog is the consistency of a new rubber eraser. The consistency of the frog is often a good indication of hoof health. Dryness, overtrimming, atrophy due to lack of pressure, uncleanliness, and neglect may bring about unhealthy and diseased conditions of the frog. If your horse is lame, we suggest consulting a veterinarian. The veterinarian can determine the cause of the lameness whether it is from an abscess or something else.
