I have trouble getting the daily recommended 1½ cups of fruit and 2 cups of vegetables on a fixed income. What are some ways I can get affordable fruits and vegetables in my diet? Fresh vegetables are not always affordable for my family. What should I do?

Buying locally grown fruits and vegetables in season can help save you money. However, fresh fruits and vegetables are not always the most economical choice. Frozen fruits and vegetables with no added sauce or canned fruits and vegetables packed in water are good alternatives to fresh. Watch for sales on frozen or canned foods in your local grocery store. Also watch for coupons in the Sunday paper. Keep frozen and canned fruits and vegetables on hand so you can add to family meals.
