Whether you use sugar or artificial sweeteners is a choice. There are pros and cons to choosing either. Artificial sweeteners such as aspartame (Equal/Nutrasweet), saccharin (Sweet’N Low), and sucralose (Splenda) can be beneficial for those trying to watch their total calorie intake or needing to eat less sugar for health reasons. Artificial sweeteners provide no calories. Few people experience any side effects from these sweeteners, and all three listed above are approved by the FDA. Try different kinds to find the one you like. Pure cane sugar (as well as brown sugar and turbinado sugar) provides 45 calories per tablespoon.
