I don’t like for my kids to be outside by themselves, so they watch a lot of TV. What can I do to increase their activity level?

• Go outside with your kids, play with them, and get some activity for yourself as well. • As a full-time working mother, you can’t be involved in every activity, so team up with other parents to rotate taking kids out for activities such as bowling, skating, swimming, or other playground activities. • If you have the money, you can hire someone (a college student or a mother) for very minimal pay to be with them in the backyard or outside or at the park for an hour or two. Children will enjoy being outside and playing. They will increase their activity level without your being there. • Enroll your child in after-school or community camp type programs that may include a variety of structured games and playful exercises that will increase their activity level (YMCA, Salvation Army, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, churches, etc.). • Find indoor activities besides TV that your child can do. Dancing, indoor obstacle course, games, or art projects are all good choices.
