It takes my toddler forever to eat. Is it O.K. to let her watch TV while she is eating?

Lifelong eating habits are learned early. Eating while watching TV is not a good idea for any age, especially young children. Research suggests that children consume more calories while watching TV or crave foods advertised on TV. It also diverts their attention away from eating. You can help your child develop good habits by making mealtime pleasant, relaxed, and TV free. It can be a time to enjoy being with other family members and to learn about food.

Tips to help your poky (slow) eater:
- Offer healthy foods at regular meal and snack times so your child will be ready to eat.
- Offer small portions of foods, 1 to 2 tablespoons. If more is wanted, serve second helpings.
- Allow your child time to eat.
- Allow your child to stop eating when she says she is full.
- Don’t pressure, threaten, or beg your child to eat or to clean his plate.
