Do people spend more when they use a credit card than they do with cash?

Yes. A number of researchers have found that people tend to spend more when purchases are made with a credit card. One reason commonly given for this is the psychology of how the human brain works. Credit cards reduce the pain of paying for something because the money does not have to immediately come out of our pocket. Therefore, it feels easier to spend more. In addition, if people use a credit card, they have no visual cues that money is being spent, and they can lose track of the total amount of their spending.

When you use a credit card, it's a good idea to write the amount down or even enter it as an entry in your bank register so that you can track your credit card expenditures. This serves as a visual cue of how much you are spending. Then when the credit card bill actually arrives, you are more on top of your finances.
