Keeping a food journal is a way to learn more about your eating patterns so you can determine what changes you want to make. A food journal will give you a firsthand look at the types and amounts of food you are eating. For example, you will be able to see the amounts of fruits and vegetables you are eating and be able to compare that to what is recommended. Using a food journal can also help you better understand why you eat at certain times, such as stressful situations that trigger "emotional eating." Being able to look at what you ate when stressed makes you more aware of your choices and helps you learn what works better the next time.

Start a food journal for one to two weeks to learn about your overall food habits. After making changes to your food patterns, keep track of these changes by using a food journal three to four days in a row every few months. You may also want to use a food journal during stressful times when you are prone to "emotional eating."

A food journal is a great tool that will help you in your journey to better health. Remember a food journal is something that only you will see so be sure to keep it honest.
