Washington State is a selenium-deficient state so you should contact your local county Cooperative Extension office to obtain a soil-testing kit and test your pastures for levels of selenium and other nutrients. Pulling a hay sample and testing for selenium levels will also help you discover any deficiencies. Selenium supplementation should be implemented in your horses' diet if deficiency exists, however, selenium can be easily toxic and should not be supplemented without the advice of an equine nutritionist.
