Choosing healthier drinks is a great step toward having a healthy diet. The most important change that you could make in the beverages you and your family choose is to reduce or eliminate sugar-sweetened beverages. Sugar-sweetened beverages such as soft drinks, sports drinks, sweet tea, energy drinks, specialty coffee drinks, and flavored water add lots of calories to your diet but little nutrition.Water should be your first choice for a beverage throughout the day. Try adding slices of fruit or making herb tea if you don't like the taste of plain water. Other healthy drinks include fat-free or low-fat milk, vegetable juice, 100% fruit juice, and tea. These beverages offer added benefits of vitamins, antioxidants, and other health benefits. You and your family should limit the amount of fruit juice, even 100% fruit juice, due to the high calorie level.
