A recent survey found that 11 to 14 year olds used media an average of 6 hours and 33 minutes per day, which includes TV, video games, radio, computer with Internet, and print media. Fifteen more minutes of media time were shown for Hispanic and black children than white children. It was also shown that as the education level of the parents increased, so did the time children spent with media. Likewise, a higher income showed a higher use of media. Families earning under $35,000 averaged only 5 hours of media time compared to the 6 or more hours in higher-earning families. The breakdown of time showed TV as 3 hours spent with media; over an hour on audio media; 1 hour each on videos, DVDs, or movies and computers; and the rest broken down over print media and video games.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends 2 hours or less of screen time each day for children over 2 years of age and no screen time for children under 2.
