How can I identify the cockroaches I'm having a problem with in my house?

First, make sure you’re actually having a “problem”. It’s normal for a pest to wander in occasionally. If you see a cockroach in your home once in a while, you probably just have a case of accidental entry. For those that you only find on occasion, you can simply trap them and release them away from your home outside.

If you’re seeing multiple cockroaches in your home each day, you have a problem. If you are having a continous problem with cockroaches, it's important to properly identify the species, because there are different control tactics for different species. The best thing to do is to collect a specimen and take it to your local extension office. The extension agent will be able to identify, or find someone to identify, the pest and give you suggestions for control.
