How do bed bugs spread?

Last Updated: April 04, 2012

View as web page

Here are some common ways that bed bugs are spread:

  • Hitching a ride in backpacks and other items from an infested home.
  • Used furniture (make sure to check all seams, etc when buying used furniture to make sure it's bed bug free)
  • Luggage and clothing (this is a very common way for bed bugs to travel from a motel or hotel to other locations)

Make sure to check the seams of mattresses for bed bugs before bringing your luggage into a hotel room.  The cleanliness/uncleanliness of the room is not a good indication, so always check the mattress.
