Bed bugs are only active and feed at night, so one sign that you may have a bed bug problem would be finding multiple red bumps on your body that were not there when you went to sleep. However, red bumps could be from many causes. Do not assume that you have bed bugs until you actually find one, or have multiple other signs of an infestation to go along with any bumps.

Bed bugs are not microscopic and can be easily seen, they are about the size of a tick and are extremely flat. Look for bed bugs in mattress seams, box springs, behind headboards, pictures, and other items that provide dark, tight places for them to hide during the day.

Other signs of an infestation include finding blood spots (where bed bugs have accidentally been crushed) and/or excrement (little black stains) on sheets, mattresses, etc. If you find any of these signs you may have a bed bug infestation.

If you find bed bugs, contact your local cooperative extension office or a pest control company to assist you in eliminating the problem. Bed bug infestations are very difficult to eliminate and you are encouraged to seek professional help.
