Cocklebur is a summer annual weed that can be controlled relatively easily with properly timed applications of 2,4-D (numerous trade names), dicamba (Banvel®), and triclopyr (Remedy®). Two-way mixtures of 2,4-D and dicamba (Weedmaster®) or 2,4-D and picloram (Grazon® P+D) may also be used to control a wide spectrum of broadleaf weeds in bermudagrass pastures and hay fields. Application should be made when cockleburs are young and have enough height to be just taller than the bermudagrass canopy. This can vary with location, but June would be typical. The bermudagrass may show some minor signs of injury with some of these herbicides but will quickly recover.
