Goats are active foragers that selectively browse over a wide variety of roughages to meet their nutritional demands. If given a choice, goats prefer grass over clover, browse over grass, grazing along fence lines instead of in the center of the pasture, grazing the top of the pasture’s canopy before grazing close to soil level, and foraging on rough, steep land over flat, smooth land. The pasture height is another factor that influences dietary selection by goats. When goats are fed on pastures alone, they require tall (not less than 4 inches), good-quality pastures to achieve high intake and to perform adequately.
