Can I mix my own ration for my animals?

Yes, you can mix your own ration; however, make sure you know the appropriate proportion of each nutrient to add in your feed. If you add too much or too little of a particular ingredient, your ration may not be balanced. This situation can lead to nutrient deficiencies in your herd, or your animals may become sick from consuming toxic levels of certain nutrients. For assistance contact your local Cooperative Extension agent or other agricultural professionals for advice on formulating a ration. Other options include sending a sample of your ration to a nutrition lab for analysis or using Langston University’s feed intake calculator for developing a ration.
