What controls the estrous cycle in the doe?

Last Updated: July 07, 2010

The events of the estrous cycle are controlled by the relationship of the hypothalamic-releasing hormones, gonadotropins and ovarian hormones. The pineal gland in the brain secretes melatonin during periods of darkness, which increases cyclic (heat) activity during the shorter days of fall. However, exposure to extended day length (spring) will cease estrous activity as seen during March through June (depending on your location).
