What is direct marketing, and what are its benefits?

Last Updated: August 25, 2010

Direct marketing of livestock involves the producer selling directly to the consumer. There is no intermediary, or "middle man," involved in this arrangement, so all of the income earned will go directly to the producer. In other words, the producer markets his own products and sets his prices to earn the highest dollar value possible without over- or under-pricing himself.

The advantages of a direct marketing system include:

1) Consumers who are tired of factory-raised meat found in supermarkets will have better access to fresh products.

2) Direct marketing can give the farmer a larger share of the food dollar and possibly a higher return on each unit sold.

3) Farmers who are unable to compete in or are locked out of traditional markets can build a thriving business.

4) Some farmers who direct market their products can add value to those products to increase their profit margin
