Production costs and the market will determine whether it is feasible to make a profit selling goats. How much you spend on feed and health care will determine your profit margin, but don’t cut corners to the detriment of your animals. Try to rely on a forage-based production system to provide most of the nutrition for your herd. You can minimize purchased feed by having a well-thought-out forage program. This program may include stockpiling forages for the winter or limit-grazing a cool-season forage during the winter. Also, kidding later in the spring when green grass is available for the doe can reduce feed costs, but parasite problems in some areas may be worse. Supplement only when conditions dictate, and establish a sound biosecurity program to prevent the introduction and transmission of diseases on your farm.
Consider an alternative marketing regime of direct or niche marketing to restaurants, farmer's markets, and ethnic grocery stores. Organic goat meat production is another alternative.
