I am considering making a Roth IRA contribution this year. Can you recommend a Roth IRA investment fast, before the cut-off date? And what is that date anyway?

For both traditional and Roth IRAs, the contribution deadline for any given year is April 15 of the following year. So you have until April 15, 2009, to make a Roth IRA contribution for 2008. One possible investment option is mutual funds. A helpful fund-finder tool is available at: www.kiplinger.com/tools/fundfinder/fundsearch.php. No matter where you choose to open your Roth IRA, it is easy to open the account. Call the bank or mutual fund company or brokerage firm's toll-free number and request an enrollment kit, then return it with your check. Or visit a bank or brokerage firm’s local office (even many online brokers have walk-in branches), where they can help you get started. And congratulations for making this smart financial move!
