The Library of Congress recommends that you ensure the photos are dry before attempting to remove mold. Do not freeze wet photos. They should be air dried. You can remove mold using a vacuum cleaner and/or a soft brush. Discard the bag after vacuuming. Clean brushes to prevent spreading the mold spores.

Damage to the photographs may be irreversible. If the pictures are especially valuable, it is better to consult a professional restoration expert before attempting to dry photos or remove mold. Firms dealing with fire and flood restoration may be able to provide names of these experts.
