According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), regular physical activity can lower high blood pressure and also reduce your risk for other health problems.
Always check with your health provider before making major lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise program. He or she may be able to recommend how much and what types of activity are safe for you.
Generally, you should try to elevate your heart rate through physical activity at least 30 minutes on most days of the week. You can do it all at once or break it up into shorter periods of at least 10 minutes each.
Moderate-intensity activities include brisk walking, dancing, bowling, riding a bike, working in a garden, and cleaning the house. If your health provider agrees, you also may want to do more intense activities, such as jogging, swimming, and playing sports.
