Have a question? Try asking one of our Experts

My maiden mare has just started her ninth month of pregnancy. I've noticed one udder has some swelling and it's hard to the touch. Is this normal? Everything else seems fine and there is no discharge of any kind.

It is normal for a mare to start showing signs of udder development during the last trimester of pregnancy. Sometimes one side may develop sooner than the other. It is probably nothing to be concerned about. Continue to watch her. Her entire udder should start to fill out as she gets closer to foaling. If you have any further concerns or notice any abnormalities, consult your local veterinarian.
