Thoroughbreds are commonly identified with a lip tattoo with a letter, denoting the year born, and a series of numbers. You can research the horse's ancestry through The Jockey Club Information Systems for a small fee. It gives you the horse's identity, pedigree, and tabulated race record. Other services are available at an additional cost.
