What is nutrient use efficiency and how do I measure it in organic systems?

Nutrient use efficiency is evaluated in different ways and this can cause confusion. In conventionally managed systems this term is most often equated with "fertilizer use efficiency" computed by taking the yield increase associated with fertilization divided by the amount of fertilizer applied. Organic farmers would probably be more interested in nutrient use efficiency as defined by ecologists who consider the amount of yield or nutrient taken up by the plant compared against the quantity of plant available nutrients present in the soil. The ability of the plant to produce and extract nutrients from soils and organic reserves through biological cycling or beneficial association with microbes is subject of interest.
