A wide variety of cover crop seed is available through mail-order seed catalogs. It is important to remember that even cover crop seed must be certified organic seed if it is to be used in an organic farming system. Fortunately, certified organic seed is increasingly available. If certified organic seed is not commercially available for the species or cultivar desired, then untreated seed may be used provided the producer can show adequate documentation that certified seed was not available to their certification agency. Untreated cover crop seed is more widely available in local seed and feed stores or from area farmers than certified organic cover crop seed.
