The soft putty-like mass is called the hippomane. It is an aggregate of urinary calculus (deposits or stones) which forms throughout pregnancy and is present in all placentas in the allantoic cavity. It varies in color and size and has a layered appearance when cut. The hippomane contains high concentrations of nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Only one hippomane occurs in the allantoic fluid and is passed during or after second-stage (fetus-expelled) delivery.
