Hot Water Heating Systems commonly circulate hot water through radiators or baseboard units. As cool air passes by the radiator or baseboard unit, the air is heated and circulated throughout the room. To assure air is able to efficiently circulate, keep radiators or baseboards clean and unobstructed from window treatments and household furnishings. For radiator systems, bleed the air from your radiators once or twice each year. Turn the air valve or the key on each radiator until water comes out. Hold a bucket under the valve and remember the water is hot. Shut the valve tightly when water stops spurting. If the system is an oil-fired boiler, the boiler should be serviced, cleaned, and checked annually by a qualified service technician to keep its efficiency high. Hot water piping that is running through cold or unheated spaces (e.g. crawl space) will also retain hot temperatures by insulating the pipes.
