What is air infiltration?

Air infiltration is natural air ventilation that occurs when outside air enters a house uncontrollably through cracks and openings. Air infiltration is influenced by wind, the location of air leaks in the house, and the temperature difference between the outside and inside of the house. Sealing cracks and openings in your home can significantly reduce heating and cooling costs. To determine where home air infiltration is taking place, an energy auditor uses a diagnostic piece of equipment called a blower door. Weatherizing a home reduces air infiltration and is done by installing air sealing materials such as caulking and weatherstripping.
